Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14)

The current sermon series is entitled “Know Your Faith” and is intended to start discussion and reflection around what it is we believe as Christians. People today need to understand, at more than a shallow level, what the Christian faith is about and why Christians have the faith in Jesus and the Scriptures that they do.

The Transfiguration of Jesus was a time of great revelation for Peter, James and John. For Peter it was a real lesson about focusing on Jesus – a good lesson for every believer. It was something Peter would write about latter (2 Peter 1:16-19). For the three disciples it was a glimpse of the Shekhinah glory of God revelated through Jesus. Read about this event in Matthew 17:1–8Mark 9:2–13, and Luke 9:28–36.

You are warmly welcome to come and join us for worship. And a warm creche is available for the young ones.

Our community groups and para-church organizations are now back to using the facilities including (contact your group leaders for details):

  • Roskill Together (office now upstairs)
  • Family Builders
  • Full Gospel Business Association
  • Mandarin Language School
  • Mt Roskill Craft Group
  • Mt Roskill Chinese Group
  • Chinese Dance Team

It was a fun Easter Sunday trying to squeeze people into our very small space to celebrate while we await the use of the upper level of the new church. With a number of families online we made the best of what we had – well done everyone! And the morning tea was awesome as ever … Happy Resurrection Day!

The message of Easter reminds us of the reality of human sin … but then we don’t have to look far in the world to see that reality. From betrayal by a friend and disciple, to rejection by the masses and crucifixion on a Cross, Jesus suffered the worst of what the world can offer. He resurrection however validated the extent of God’s love, what Jesus taught us and proves there is a better way walking with Him … one that has impact in this world and the next! As a Christian community we are committed to living out this freeing and sacrificial love of God in the world always looking forward to the better that is to come.

Loving and Almighty God, Help us You God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit in our hearts daily as we walk through the ups and downs of this year. Increase our love for our families, our friends, our brothers and sisters in faith and for the wider community. Help us to bite our tongues rather than speak things that are not positive or edifying, encourage our boldness to speak praise and encouragement and to lift our voices and lives in worship. Protect us Lord from those who would do harm to ourselves or Your Kingdom. Help us to pray for the world with all its conflicts and strife, but also its beauty and generosity, that, one day, it might be on earth as in heaven. Lord strengthen our faith, or discipline, our love that we might better serve You and bring You glory. Amen.

Good progress continues made as Sabre pushes forward. Progress may be slowed soon as our funds get tighter and we have delays from Watercare and Vector/Northpower. We are still on track for getting the upper level working before too long. We will need some decent fundraising to get the community center and kitchen complete downstairs.

Good progress continues to be made. The Sabre team have been working diligently throughout the summer – awesome job and coming on well!

Thank you to all those who have helped with and supported our fundraising efforts over the last couple of weeks at Bunnings and the Carols in the Park (see Facebook page for some photos). We have around $2,000,000 to raise to complete the Community Facility aspect of the project so every effort, every contribution counts!

Congratulations to the Mt Roskill Fusion team who competed at the biennial MEVE Dance Competition and came a very respectable 3rd! Well done! Lots of effort and preparation there. St John’s was represented by some of our Samoan and Tongan members and by the Mt Roskill Chinese Group who have had their home at St John’s since inception. Supporters in the audience were LOUD. Well done everyone. Awesome too to see the support from our MP Carlos Cheung and the Puketāpapa Local Board.

The epistle of James, in the New Testament of the Bible, encourages us to demonstrate real faith by engaging with the community in helpful, practical ways. Faith, if not supported by the way one lives and loves others (not just those close to you), James says, is not really faith at all. Faith that only relies on what one has and can control and that does extend itself to rely on God, in service, is only what we can do anyway and will never have a greater vision for the future. It is the call of all of us, as human beings and as people of faith, to respond to the need we see about us with deep love and practical action.

PROGRESS We have now had our Building Consent issued! Our thanks go to Auckland City Council staff and our local Councillor Christine Fletcher for ensuring things have been done well and on time. Sabre are now working onsite and the excavation has been done and work on the foundations getting ‘out of the ground’ are well underway.

COMMUNITY & CHURCH Our thanks also go to all the community and church groups who have borne with the current restrictions in facilities and inevitable practical and scheduling challenges that has created. It is good to see so many in good heart and excited by what is developing. Roskill Together is working out of the Minister’s Office. The deck has been converted into a temporary church office and the Minister is working on-site, in the community or at home.

CHURCH SERVICES Our church services are still operating albeit in a somewhat confined space for only about 70 people max at 10am on Sundays with the children and their teachers downstairs in the Training room. Services are also streamed on zoom (click above to access). At some stage we will likely need to go back online for a few weeks or so while the lift and connecting construction is completed (TBA). We now have a very small chapel …

… which gets constantly reconfigured for all our groups.

FUNDRAISING As many of you will be aware fundraising in the current environment is more than challenging. Traditional community providers are simply not able to cope or provide funds as happened in the past. This creates challenges for us and for our hardworking and committed fundraising team. Now, more than ever, the combined contributions of multiple individual contributors, small and large, are making the difference and enabling us to proceed. If you can help please email us at vision@stjohns.org.nz or contact the Minister 021-750-362 or colin@stjohns.org.nz For an overview of the project click here.

Your support, continued patience, encouragement and prayers, during what will be a project of some months, is much appreciated.

A few photos tonight … more and video snapshots to come … please send any other good ones you have and would like loaded to colin@stjohnsnz.org.nz

… if all goes according to plan we will all be using the facilities by mid 2025! Please pray for the work, the fundraising and all the community and church groups who will be disrupted temporarily over the next few months as we build.
